# A Day That Shocked the World: Photos Capture Stunned Planet After 9/11 Terror Attacks ## America's Black Tuesday The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, were a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda against the United States on the morning of September 11, 2001. The attacks resulted in 2,977 fatalities, over 25,000 injuries, and substantial long-term health consequences, in addition to at least $10 billion in infrastructure and property damage. There were no survivors from any of the flights that crashed that day. The attacks were the deadliest terrorist acts in world history and the single deadliest incident for firefighters and law enforcement officers in the history of the United States. ### The Attacks At 8:46 a.m. Eastern Time, American Airlines Flight 11, a Boeing 767, crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. Seventeen minutes later, at 9:03 a.m., United Airlines Flight 175, also a Boeing 767, crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center. At 9:37 a.m., American Airlines Flight 77, a Boeing 757, crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, just outside of Washington, D.C. At 10:03 a.m., United Airlines Flight 93, a Boeing 757, crashed into a field in Stonycreek Township, Pennsylvania. It is believed that the passengers and crew of Flight 93 thwarted the hijackers' plan to crash the plane into the United States Capitol or the White House. ### The Aftermath The 9/11 attacks had a profound impact on the United States and the world. In the immediate aftermath of the attacks, the United States launched the War on Terror, which has included military action in Afghanistan, Iraq, and other countries. The attacks also led to the passage of the Patriot Act, which has been criticized for expanding the government's surveillance powers. The 9/11 attacks also had a significant impact on the way that Americans think about security and terrorism. In the years since the attacks, there has been a growing sense of fear and anxiety about the possibility of another terrorist attack. ## Remembering 9/11 The 9/11 attacks were a tragedy that claimed the lives of thousands of innocent people. It is important to remember the victims of the attacks and to learn from the lessons of that day. We must never forget the innocent lives that were lost on 9/11. We must also never forget the heroism of the first responders who risked their lives to save others. The 9/11 attacks were a day that shocked the world. But they also showed us the strength and resilience of the human spirit. We must never forget the lessons of that day and we must always stand up for freedom and justice.
