Houston Welcomes Hurricane Katrina Refugees

Estimated 200,000 People Displaced by Devastating Storm

Houston, Texas - August 30, 2005

Houston has taken in an estimated 200,000 refugees from New Orleans following the catastrophic landfall of Hurricane Katrina on August 29th, 2005. The city has opened up shelters, schools, and other public buildings to accommodate the influx of displaced people.

Hurricane Katrina, one of the most powerful storms in American history, made landfall in Louisiana with winds of over 170 miles per hour. The storm surge caused widespread flooding in New Orleans, submerging 80% of the city. Hundreds of thousands of people were forced to flee their homes, seeking refuge in nearby areas.

Houston has been at the forefront of relief efforts, providing essential supplies, shelter, and medical care to those affected by the hurricane. The city has also set up a donation hotline and website for people who wish to contribute to the recovery efforts.
