Much-changed Liverpool were stunned by Serie A’s sixth-placed side Atalanta at Anfield as the Italians cruised to a 3-0 first-leg lead in their Europa League last-16 tie.
Goals from Josip Ilicic, Alejandro Gomez and Robin Gosens gave Atalanta a famous victory on Merseyside, leaving Jurgen Klopp’s side with a mountain to climb in the second leg.
It was a disappointing night for Liverpool, who made nine changes to the team that beat Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday.
Klopp’s decision to rest key players backfired as Atalanta took full advantage of a weakened Liverpool defense. The Italians were quicker, sharper and more clinical than their opponents, and they fully deserved their victory.
